Together towards a declaration on Peasants’ Rights

The rights of peasants initiative, which La Via Campesina started 17 years ago, is now in a process within the United Nations towards a Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas. A draft declaration will be discussed and negotiated in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on May 15-19th. See more information here

The Council is made of 47 Member States, which are elected by the majority of members of the General Assembly of the United Nations through direct and secret ballot. See the list of current members here. We encourage organizations in these countries to follow-up their governments so they can play a positive role in the negotiations in May.

This declaration, if approved, will create an international legal instrument to protect the rights of and draw attention to the threats and discrimination suffered by peasants and other people working in rural areas.
