About us

More and Better is an indipendent international campaign comprising social movements, civil society and NGOs organizations from over 50 countries and a core of unified national campaigns. It has been established to support and be a part of the fight to eradicate hunger and poverty. This objective is closely linked to the first Millennium Development Goal which provides an important milestone for this campaign. More and Better will advocate for the increase of both the quantity and quality of support to agriculture, rural development and food.

Our shared goals for a world without hunger and poverty

The world has got enough resources to feed the planet but still 923 million people go to bed hungry every night (FAO 2008). This is totally unacceptable. Under the banner of More and Better the campaign will lobby for vital changes in national and international policies geared towards:

Why focus on agriculture and rural development?

The majority of the undernourished people live in poverty in rural areas of developing countries, often in droughtprone  and marginalized areas. The majority are farmers or others whose livelihoods are closely linked to the land. To eradicate hunger and poverty, aid must be targeted to these people and focus on agriculture and rural development which creates livelihoods that are truly sustainable for generations to come. The causes of hunger and poverty are complex and manifold. Food production and rural development in developing countries are impacted by global, national and local policies, economies and power structures; trade rules and trading practices, ownership of land and land reforms, the quality and quantity of agricultural research, possibilities and terms for credit, tax policies etc. More and Better recognizes that increasing the quantity and quality of aid for agriculture and rural development addresses one component of global hunger.

The quality of aid is important

The quality of aid and support for agriculture and rural development is as important as the quantity. There are as many examples of good aid as there are of ineffective and inappropriate aid and support. More and Better is concerned about the quality of aid that is delivered to developing countries. We will evaluate the aid and support, find out what is good and bad, work out guidelines, promote good examples and influence governments, organisations and agencies to increase the quality of aid and support.

Participants have joined hands to mobilize political will to increase both the quantity and quality of aid for agricultural and rural development. This s the thread that binds the participants in a common cause. The causes of hunger and poverty are complex and manifold. Each organisation and campaign focuses on those that it sees are the most important and will determine its own goals and riorities. But, we are all concerned by the decline of aid to agriculture and rural development and have agreed to
join together to reverse this trend and improve the quality of this aid.

The organisations and campaigns in developing countries will play the major role in defining better aid. They will also work to increase the level and quality of support from their own governments and donors for agriculture and rural development.

Organizations and campaigns in the OECD/donor countries will lobby their own governments for More and Better aid for agriculture and rural development, based on the overall goals of the campaign and the particular policies chosen at the national levels that best address these goals.

The international campaign will approach international institutions on issues of common concerns to the national campaigns, facilitate co-operation, exchanging of experiences and viewpoints.

The More and Better cooperates, among the others, with the International Alliance Against Hunger (IAAH) and the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (IPC) which is established by social movements and non governmental organisations.
